Standards and Technical Documents

The List

Below find a non-exhaustive list of frequently requested standards, codes, and specifications accessible in print and online. Please note that these may not be the most current editions of standards, and access to some standards platforms requires registration. Contact the Engineering Librarian to propose additional resources for the list.

Finding Standards in Nimitz Search

Nimitz Library has a small number of standards in its general collection. To locate these in Nimitz Search, it's helpful to know information including:

  • The name of the standards developing organization (for example: IEEE, ISO, ASME, etc.)
  • The alphanumeric identifier
  • The year of approval
  • Keywords in the standard title

See below for two examples of standards in Nimitz Search. Note that standards are classified as books in Nimitz Search, and most are physical items. Use the Books content type filter and the Physical Items availability filter to drill down your search results.

A search in Nimitz Search for ANSI laser safety. The first result is American National Standard for safe use of lasers.

Standards Incorporated by Reference

Some standards are incorporated by the U.S. government in rulemakings, and these standards are often referred to as incorporated by reference (IBR).

These standards are treated as if they were published in the Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulations, meaning they have the force and effect of law. IBR standards are sometimes made freely available in a read-only or other restricted format. Check the following databases to see if your standard is available.
