EN430 Underwater Work Systems

Find key databases for scholarly resources in support of your research assignment.

Welcome!

In this guide, you'll find recommended databases for finding scholarly resources in support of your underwater intervention scenario assignment.

If you need help getting started or get stuck along the way contact your Engineering Librarian using the information on the right side of the page.

Brainstorm Around Your Topic

Before you start searching in the scholarly literature, consider brainstorming around your topic through the following questions.

What are some different ways to describe the thing you're trying to research? For example, if you wanted to find information about the Titan, you might also call it a submersible or an underwater vehicle.

What people, places, or things are related to your topic? Another example is OceanGate, the name of the company that operated the Titan. You might also think about other submersibles, companies, explorers, and more.

What about your topic interests you? Think about its purpose, function, or what it's made of. A search in Engineering Village for submersible brings back tens of thousands of results. Adding a term like pressure hull to the search string narrows down the results list considerably.

Searching While Brainstorming

You may wonder where to find information to answer the questions above. Google, Wikipedia and news sources are excellent resources for this type of brainstorming work to provide a high-level overview on a topic.

Skimming a relevant book or chapter can also bring you up to speed. Here are some examples in Nimitz Search for our submersible topic.

Once you've got enough context, jump to the Finding Scholarly Sources tab to locate resources for your assignment.
