FP130/Stacy

For Dr. Stacy's Fall 2024 FP130 classes

Assignment Source Requirements

Assignment Summary:

Write a letter to your member of Congress that provides an argument for why Congress is unpopular and recommendations for how it can improve its standing with the public. Your letter can discuss any facet of Congress' duties relating to lawmaking, representation, or oversight (of the federal bureaucracy). Your letter may also highlight historical features or recent developments of the institutional design of Congress, among other topics.

Source Requirements:

You should provide examples and/or analyses that support your argument. When providing evidence, you should use sources that are credible and persuasive. A source is credible if you believe that it is providing true information, and a source is persuasive if you believe that the information it provides supports your thesis and overall argument.

  • Academic sources are preferred, such as a peer-reviewed article by a social scientist, a poll by a reputable survey company, or a book by a historian
  • You must reference at least two academic sources.
  • Journalistic accounts may also be appropriate depending on how credible the source is and how persuasive the information is.
  • Online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia, should not be used as sources. Rather, you should look at where such encyclopedias receive their information from—then, if appropriate, cite that source instead.
  • Do not cite lectures—rather, find the reading that the lecture is based on and cite that.
