Logging In

When you try and download data you will be asked to log in with a screen that looks like this:

Select the Sign in with Google option and use your USNA email.

Filters

Feel free to explore the filters on the left side of the search results, but here are a few you may want to pay particular attention to:

  • Restriction Type: this is different than Data Availability filter (public data and member-funded--you can access both). You can apply to access Restricted Use data, but it requires an approval process that is probably beyond the scope of this assignment. It is recommended that you select the Public Use option.
  • Data Format: the following formats are supported by the archive, though not every dataset is available in each--SPSS, SAS, Stata, Delimited, R, Online analysis. You will ultimately be using R to analyze your data. R, alongside its own file format, can import all of those to varying degrees of difficulty. If you want to more easily open the file on your own computer to check it, Delimited files can be opened in Excel.
  • Archive and Funding Agency: many government agencies and organizations use ICPSR as their data repository host. For instance, the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) has their data available here. You may want to limit to just their data if you know they are a likely source.

ICPSR

Remember to...

When using ICPSR for this assignment consider the following:

  • Ensure that the dataset you choose includes a full 50 observations, not a "top line summary". You may need to download an open the file to check if you are unsure.
  • Some data are openly available to the public and some are only available to member institutions. You may need to log in.
  • Utilize the filters.
